If you own a Toyota or Lexus vehicle, there is a good chance that you have been affected – or at least unnerved – by the series of recalls issued by Toyota since late 2009. In the wake of the many recalls, said to affect about eight million vehicles worldwide, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a press release advising Toyota customers on what actions they should take if their vehicle is affected by one of the recalls.
In addition to the floor mat accelerator pedal entrapment recall and the unintended acceleration “sticky throttle” recall, there is also a fairly new brake recall that affects Prius, Lexus and Camry vehicles. Vehicles involved in this recall could experience braking safety problems if brake power is lost temporarily.
The 2010 Prius, Lexus HS 250h, and 2010 Camrys are affected. Drivers who experience any braking problems are advised by NHTSA to park their vehicles and contact their Toyota dealer, or contact Toyota’s North American Headquarters at 1-800-331-4331.
2010 Prius and Lexus HS 250h Recall
Drivers of these recalled vehicles may experience inconsistent brake feel on rough or slick road surfaces, leading to stopping distances that are longer than expected, potentially contributing to a traffic crash. This issue can be fixed at the dealer by a computer program update to the ABS control unit. The fix is free, and will be available in late February.
2010 Camry Recall
The length of the power steering hose on some 2010 Camry models may be insufficient. As a result, a gap between the crimp on the pressure hose and the brake tube for the left rear brake may be insufficient. The bake tube may wear and perforate in certain circumstances, leading to brake fluid leakage and impaired braking that could lead to an auto accident. To fix this problem dealers can replace or adjust the brake tube for no charge. Repairs for this recall are expected to begin in March 2010.
