In 2011, Honda Motor Co. has recalled more than 3.2 million vehicles, 2.7 million have been for defective air bags, and 1.5 million have been to find hundreds replacement parts. It is Honda’s largest recall in history.
Today, The fifth separate recall since 2008 has been issued, expanding to 876,000 in the United States, all for air bag problems which has been linked to two deaths, including 18-year-old Ashley Parham, who died in May 2009 when metal shards hit her after the air bag deployed in her 2001 Accord
Honda says it will replace air bags in 217,779 vehicles issued in 2001-02, saying the air bags might inflate with too much pressure upon impact, causing it to rupture and shooting metal fragments through the bag cushion, injuring or killing the driver.
603,421 vehicles had been recalled to find 640 replacement parts, but it was extended 30,000 worldwide and another 270 replacement parts. This recall includes 2001-02 Accord, 2001-03 Civic, 2001-03 Odyssey, 2002-03 CR-V, 2003 Pilot, 2002-03 Accura 3.2 TL, and 2003 Acura 3.2 CL vehicles.
The latest recall was prompted after a crash and injury in Florida by a Honda which wasn’t recalled. Honda has said that they are now confident they found all potentially faulty vehicles.
