Hercules Jack Up Rig 265 Evacuations Are Dangerous Due to Rig Design

hercules offshore jackup rig experiences loss of well control

News sources are reporting that there was a well blowout this morning that caused the evacuation of the Hercules 265.  The Hercules 265 is a jack up rig similar to many of the other vessels in Hercules' fleet.  These rigs are used for drilling or producing at shallow water levels.  The benefits of the jack up rig is that it is mobile - the company frequently moves these floating facilities from place to place in the Gulf of Mexico.

But what Hercules gains in terms of mobility with a jack up rig, it loses in terms of stability and safety.  Jack ups are fairly old creatures in the off-shore drilling industry and lack some of the advances that the modern rigs have.  In fact, just getting on and off these vessels is particularly dangerous while offshore.

VB Attorneys has represented a number of Hercules employees injured on jack up rigs that are just like the Hercules 265.   These cases include cases involving safety issues that arose during crew changes
