GM Issues Another Recall for Chevrolet Vehicles for Constant Tire Issues

GM recalled 36,00Recall 2012 Chevrolet Equinox0 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossover SUVs from model year 2012 because the tire-monitoring system was defective in alerting drivers when their tires are 25 percent underinflated.

The systems in the 2012 vehicles should warn drivers when tire pressure drops 25 percent below the recommended pressure, but it fails to do so. The warning light doesn't even appear until the tire pressure falls more than 25 percent.

Federal safety regulators say underinflated tires can overheat which may lead to a blowout and a crash.

The recall involves Chevrolet Impalas that were built between July 18 and Sept. 6 of 2011.

Owners of these vehicles should bring their Impalas to their dealer to get the tire pressure monitor fixed.  An update a on the computer system will also be installed free of charge.

This is not the first time GM has seen problems with their vehicles. A recent suit was filed in Detroit which claimed GM was fully aware of a defect in the 2007-2008 Chevrolet Impala’s rear suspension rods, but failed to inform retail buyers. The lawsuit claimed the rods caused premature rear tire wear and the constant need for realignment.

In July 2008, GM issued a bulletin for the 2007-08 Chevrolet Impala, however it only covered police models. Dealers only had the authorization to replace the cars’ rear suspension rods, perform an alignment, and fit tires with new rubber ONLY for police model Impalas, not for retail buyers.

GM claimed that the police model was significantly different than the retail model, but the lawsuit suggested otherwise which is evident due to several internet posts and complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Most complaints have dealt around accelerated rear-tire wear and some owners complained of bald tires after just 6,000 miles.

Despite these complaints, GM never issued a recall for the Chevrolet Impala issue.

It is clear that GM has had a history with Chevrolet in the past and doesn’t seem to be learning from their mistakes, failing to inform the drivers of their vehicles and risking their safety.
