Fairview, TX Worker Dead From Poisonous Gas And 1 Missing In Sewer Line

Last Thursday in Fairview, Texas, two contract workers for the North Texas Municipal Water District went down a wastewater collection line to remove a clog, finishing up a yearlong operation, when they were immediately overcome by poisonous gas fumes present in the line. According to sources, one of the men was a supervisor. He went down the line and didn’t emerge for quite some time and another worker went down after him.
One of the men was pulled out and pronounced dead while the other is still missing beneath. Rescuers are still searching for the worker and will most likely use cameras and a Fire Rescue team to find him.
According to Fairview Fire Chief Dick Price, the chances of finding the missing worker alive are “pretty slim.”
The missing worker is most likely to have been swept downstream deeper into the line, which is several miles long. Sewer lines are full of poisoned gas and are buried at different depths.
“Our initial indications are that the oxygen level was probably insufficient to support their operation.” Price said.
It is known that the two workers were not wearing protective gear when they went down, though the standard procedure for those working on sewer lines is to monitor air quality before going in.
An investigation is underway by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
