Drunk Drivers Cause Thousands of Accidents in Texas Each Year

The holiday season usually brings an onslaught of alcohol-related accidents, despite the known risks of drinking and driving. Approximately 40 percent of Americans are estimated to be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point in their lives. According to a 2007 report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 13,000 people were killed in drunken driving accidents in 2007.
A driver who has a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.10 or higher is seven times more likely to be involved in a fatal car accident than someone who has not consumer any alcohol. As the blood alcohol concentration goes up, so does the chances of getting into a serious car accident. For example, a driver who has a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15 or higher, is about 25 more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a driver who has not consumed alcohol. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 67 percent of the deaths caused by alcohol-related crashes in 2007 were caused by a driver who had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher.
