Distracted Drivers Are The Number One Killer Of Teens In The U.S.

Last year 5,474 people were killed on U.S roadways and an estimated 448,000 were injured in car crashes that involved distracted drivers.
In a recent poll, nearly 49% of drivers under the age of 35 have reported using their phone while driving. Though most people know it is dangerous, it still happens. We have become a society that thinks we are somehow better than everyone else on the road when it comes to driving. Today, 57% of drivers rate themselves as better than the average driver.
Here are a few facts. While a driver is texting, their eyes are off the road an average of five seconds. If you are driving 55mp, five seconds can cover an entire football field.
Out of all the drivers on the road, teenagers have proven to be the most at danger. Nearly 90% of teens have said that they have been passengers in a car when the driver is distracted. If this continues to happen, fatalities and car accidents are likely to increase over the next few years.
Now what can you do to help prevent texting and driving? If you are a passenger in a car with a distracted driver, speak up! Become the solution. By not saying anything, you become part of the problem. Tell your friends not to use their cell phone, get a bumper sticker, spread the word. Little things can help save a life.
Buckle up! Even if you are in a car that is driving safely, that doesn’t mean other drivers on the road are. 60% of drivers on the road, at any given time, are using their cell phone, according to a recent poll. Think about that the next time you are driving.
Distracted driving is the number one killer of American teens. Alcohol related accidents among teens have dropped, but teenage traffic fatalities have remained unchanged because distracted driving is on the rise.
