Did you know… tips on child car seat safety in Texas

Attention parents and caregivers in Texas – the car seat / booster seat laws in Texas have changed.  You can unravel these confusing new laws in our law library article “What you need to know about the new Texas child safety seat laws”.  You can also find more tips on moving your child up to an adult seat belt in our article “Is your child really ready for an adult seat belt?

In addition to those articles, here are some tips that may help keep your kids safe if they are involved in a car accident:

  • The safest place for a child is the BACK SEAT of a vehicle.
  • Even safer than the back seat is to make sure your child is buckled into an age and size appropriate CHILD SAFETY SEAT (car seat or booster seat).
  • Children seated in the front seat can be injured by the air bags.  Any child under the age of 13 should always ride in the BACK SEAT if the vehicle has front passenger air bags.
  • It is NEVER safe to place a rear-facing child safety seat on the front passenger seat.
  • If you need to transport a child in an emergency in the front passenger seat, MOVE THE SEAT back as far as possible.  This will keep as much space as possible between the vulnerable child and the air bag.
  • Lastly, when you use a child safety seat or booster seat, make sure you READ and FOLLOW the manufacturer’s instructions for use.  All seats are different and will install differently.  Different seats also have different height and weight limits, so it is important that you familiarize yourself with the instruction manual.
