Did Houston police do their job after three teens were killed?

Who is to blame when the driver responsible for the death of three teenagers flees the country before he can be charged?  Some critics contend that the Houston police department should have done more to keep the suspect in the country.

The accident happened in northeast Houston on a Friday night.  The suspect, Sajan Tamalshina, 25, caused a crash that killed three teenage girls.  Tamalshina, a native of Nepal in the United States on a student visa, was injured in the crash.  The girls killed in the tragic accident were RaShaunda Raleigh, Avianca Cortez and Detrihanna Davis.

Despite having sufficient evidence to take Tamalshina into custody, Houston police decided to let him go, believing they could arrest him later if necessary.  The officers believed that he was not a flight risk.  However, Tamalshina appears to have fled the country the same day as the accident that claimed the lives of the three girls.

The Monday following the crash investigators were able to determine that Tamalshina had been drunk at the time of the accident.  His blood alcohol level was over the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle in Texas.

The Houston Police Department Chief is reviewing the actions of the police officers who released Tamalshina, to determine if they could have “performed better”.  However, this will be too little, too late for the family of the teens killed by Tamalshina.
