Country Band Sugarland Gets Hit By Lawsuit

The famous country band Sugarland was hit by a lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Marion Superior Court in Indianapolis. So far, 48 plaintiffs have been attached with 7 wrongful deaths in the forefront. It is said that they are seeking a jury trial, according to the Associated Press.

On August 13th, Sugarland was minutes away from performing a concert at the fairgrounds in Indianapolis when a gust of wind that exceeded 60 miles per hour caused the stage to collapse, killing seven people and injuring dozens of passionate fans. Video of the collapse spread rapidly across the internet and is most likely going to be used as evidence for trial.

According to the lawsuit, Sugarland and other parties involved in the concert had a duty to make it a safe environment and were in breach of reasonable care. One of the lawyers for the plaintiffs has said that the band had the final decision about whether the show should go on, adding: “Unfortunately, this tragedy could have been prevented if the responsible parties had been concerned about the concertgoers that night.”

22-year old Caitlyn Kahlenbeck is the latest person to join the lawsuit. Kahlenbeck suffered a closed brain injury from a cut to the back of her head, a broken collarbone which required two surgeries, broken ribs that punctured her lungs, a fractured eye socket, and cuts and bruises. She spent 10 days in the hospital and according to her lawyer, she still has a long road to go.

The attorneys have commented about the investigations saying it has revealed many people were responsible, and a lot of research has gone into the lawsuit, including on-site studies by engineers and weather experts.

Kahlenbeck had hoped to move to an out-of-state college, but her injuries have delayed those plans. She has not been able to drive and has had limited mobility as she recovers.

This is just one story out of 48 people attached to the case. The states liability for damages from the incident is capped at $5 million under state law.

Sugarland did not comment on the lawsuit, however they did play a free concert in Indianapolis to make up for the missed show and to help raise money for the victims.
