Could cash-strapped drivers be risking lives with delayed vehicle maintenance?

Given the current economic conditions, it is no surprise that some families are choosing to forego costly maintenance or repairs on their vehicles to save money.  However, this move could have the unintended consequence of making the roads less save for other motorists.

According to AAA, there are five elements that are critical to safe vehicle operation – these five things should not be put off:

  1. Worn tires should be replaced, as loss of contact with the road surface, especially in inclement weather, can lead to a traffic crash.
  2. Suspension and alignment should be well maintained, as these items are integral to a vehicle’s steering and control.
  3. Brakes should always be well maintained, and the reason should be obvious.  Without a set of brakes in good condition (not just the brake pads but also the brake fluid and other brake components), a driver’s ability to stop a vehicle and avoid a serious accident can be compromised.
  4. Fluid levels (like oil, power steering, transmission and brake fluid) should be carefully monitored so they don’t get too low.  Because these fluids are extremely flammable, drivers should also check for leaks to prevent an unexpected vehicle fire.
  5. Wiper blades should be in good condition, and a new set of blades is inexpensive and easy to install.  Good wiper blades (and enough windshield washer fluid) will ensure that a driver can see clearly and avoid causing an auto accident.

Don’t put off these basic maintenance issues – if you do, you could not only be putting your own life at risk, but you could be endangering other road users as well.
