Corpus Christi Police: Seatbelts Saved Lives In Rollover Accident

Corpus Christi Police say that multiple lives may have been saved this week because seven people involved in a serious pickup truck accident all decided to buckle up before hitting the road.

The two-vehicle accident took place on Independence Day as thousands of Corpus Christi headed to the Bayfront area to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks. The wreck took place on the Harbor Bridge when an allegedly speeding pickup truck slammed into another pickup truck, causing the latter vehicle to roll. The crash caused a significant traffic jam and resulted in minor injuries, but police say that the accident could have had much more serious consequences.

Because all three people in the car that rolled over were wearing seatbelts, no one was ejected from the vehicle or suffered serious head injuries from hitting the roof of the cab. Instead, even though the passengers had to be extracted through the front windshield by emergency responders, the three people only received a few bumps and bruises. Similarly, the five occupants in the other pickup truck, which was ticketed for speeding, were all wearing seatbelts and all escaped serious injury.

It’s a great reminder that seat belts save lives – and we hope that in the future the worst consequences of serious rollover accidents are a few bruises and some backed up traffic.
