Common Symptoms of Whiplash

If you have experienced whiplash, you know the pain associated with this injury.  Whiplash is most often caused by a car accident, when one vehicle rear ends another.  This type of injury occurs when the neck is hyper-extended.

In a rear-end collision, the body is moved forward, but the head momentarily remains behind.  As a result, the head rocks up and back, resulting in torn or stretched ligaments and muscles.  The muscles will contract in a reflex action, which could cause overcompensation.

The recovery time for whiplash varies greatly.  For some people, it can lead to a lengthy period of partial disability and pain.  Frequently, individuals with whiplash injuries end up taking time off of work and incurring large medical bills in an effort to pursue treatment.

The symptoms of a whiplash injury are wide ranging.  Typical symptoms include the following:

• Neck pain
• Backaches
• Sensory disturbance (i.e. pins and needles sensation) in the arms and legs
• Shoulder pain
• Headaches

Whiplash is not a life threatening injury, but it can still cause inconvenience, as you deal with the pain and possible financial loss.  If you believe you have whiplash, your physician will most likely order an x-ray to make sure there are no bone fractures.  Occasionally, additional medical imaging will be conducted to rule out any other injuries.  Once your physician determines that you did experience whiplash, you may be given a soft cervical collar, which will provide additional support to your neck.  Bed rest is often recommended and medication is sometimes prescribed to  help manage the pain.  Depending on the extent of injury, your doctor may even recommend physical therapy to help strengthen the muscles and alleviate painful motions.

If you were in a car accident that caused whiplash, you may be entitled to compensation to cover your lost wages, medical expenses and pain and suffering.  Contact Vujasinovic & Beckcom P.L.L.C. for advice regarding compensation for your whiplash injury at (877) 724-7800 or (713) 224-7800.
