China's Work Fatalities Dropped, Can the U.S. Follow?

Last year In China, more than 75,000 people were killed due to work-related accidents. This is a 5% drop from the year before.

Luo Lin, head of the State Administration of Work Safety in China reported at a national conference on Saturday that work safety improved in the country’s most important sectors last year.

For example, coal miner deaths went down 19% and overall coal mine accidents dropped 14.4%.

If China can raise the safety in the workplace, can the United States do the same?

Last year, thousands of fatal work accidents occurred in America, with Wyoming being among the most dangerous states. Though Safety Administrations have tried to take initiative, it doesn’t seem that enforcements are doing the best they possibly can.

In China, 4,700 people were held responsible for fatal accidents by their safety administrations. 808 people were investigated for criminal liability. So far, just being two weeks into 2012, an accident investigation panel under China’s Cabinet settled nine of thirteen major accidents that had occurred last year.

Today, workers feel obligated to not say anything against their companies in fear of becoming blacklisted. This is illegal! A company is supposed to protect their employees, not endanger them.

Workers are injured on the job every day. Since companies do little to help them, most of the time they are forced to work with neck pain, back injuries, shoulder injuries, and even brain injuries.

The lawyers at V&B are experienced and know how these companies operate. V&B has settled millions of dollars for our clients in the past.
