Car and Truck Accident Facts: the most deadly holidays in Texas

With the fourth of July just around the corner, this is a good time to remind Texans about the dangers facing them on roads and highways during major holidays.  The Texas Department of Transportation collects and analyzes data from motor vehicle accidents across the state, and every year they publish their findings.

The most recent data available for holiday week and weekend fatalities are from the year 2007.  Here, in order from most fatalities to the least, are the number of crashes and the number of people killed on big holidays:

  1. Labor Day weekend (78 hours total):  30 fatal crashes, 37 fatalities
  2. Memorial Day (78 hours total):  32 fatal crashes, 36 fatalities
  3. Thanksgiving (102 hours total):  31 fatal crashes, 35 fatalities
  4. Christmas (54 hours total):  20 fatal crashes, 24 fatalities
  5. Fourth of July (30 hours total):  15 fatal crashes, 16 fatalities
  6. New Year (30 hours total):  11 fatal crashes, 11 fatalities

As you can see, holiday weekends always result in some number of crashes and fatalities that forever change the lives of Texans.  To stay safe on the road this summer, please check out the road safety articles in our Car and Truck Accident law library like “Five tips for surviving deadly rollover accidents in Texas”, “How Aggressive Driving Contributes to Texas Car and Truck Accidents”, and “Drowsy Drivers Significantly Increase the Risk of Auto Accidents”.
