Only a short time has passed since two more Americans were kidnapped by pirates off the coast of Nigeria. In a time when the movie Captain Phillips is making the media rounds, there is little talk about how to avoid these kinds of attacks in the first place.
These large, multi-million dollar shipping companies are continuing to put policies in place that disallow armed guards on the vessels, in the meantime, they are intentionally plotting their course through these dangerous areas to save time and money.
Insurance companies have a stake here as well. They are being paid a premium for protection against Piracy, and in the event something does happen, like it did to Captain Phillips and the two Americans just recently, the insurance companies will then negotiate with the pirates and pay the ransom in exchange for the safe return of the kidnapped crew members.
Now, doesn't it make more sense to protect the ship and the crew from this ever happening as opposed to being in a position where we are negotiating with criminals? I think so.
