Baytown man is dead after police chase; speed a factor in crash

Police tried to stop an SUV driver in Baytown early Saturday morning, but the driver did not stop – and he paid for that decision with his life.  The man, whose name has not been released, sped away and lost control near the intersection of Lobit and Jones.

As a result the 27 year old driver hit a pole and his SUV flipped over.  The man died at the scene of the accident.  The incident is still under investigation as police do not know why the man fled in the first place.

This is a tragic situation but Baytown residents are lucky because it could have been worse.  It is a well-known fact that speed kills, and a frightened speeding driver is a dangerous thing indeed.  He could have run over a pedestrian, struck a motorcycle rider, crashed into a car – there are so many things that could have gone wrong.

The worst thing of all is that the driver lost his life when his SUV rolled over and crashed, and his family deserves nothing but compassion.  This incident is a sobering reminder of the dangers we all face on the road, whether from our own questionable judgment or the impulsive and dangerous actions of others.
