Another reason to fight maritime piracy: terrorism

As if maritime worker safety isn’t enough of a reason, international governments and shipping companies have another compelling reason to fight piracy: terrorism.

To combat the twin challenge of piracy and terrorism, Interpol plans to create a task force to crack down on all facets of maritime piracy.  What such a crackdown would look like remains a mystery, however.

It is unfortunate that it is taking fears over terrorism to “do the right thing” in this situation – protect maritime workers from pirate attacks.

The situation off the coast of eastern Africa is serious, indeed.  According to Interpol, ransom demands from pirates in the area average about $2.2 million, a huge amount that some shipping companies are willing to pay.  Their willingness to pay is of course what is driving up the rates of piracy.  If ships and their crews were actually better protected and able to fend off these attacks, this situation never would have happened.
