A Dallas Man's Bicycling Injury Causes Uproar In The Cycling Community

A North Texas cyclist, Dallas Torres, was just starting his daily 40-mile bike ride around Dallas when a car slammed into him on the Jefferson Boulevard bridge, throwing him onto the windshield and breaking his neck.

According to his wife, Marissa, he is in bad shape and with therapy, doctors hope that he makes a full recovery.

This injury seems to be the last straw for the cycling community. Bike lanes would vastly improve the safety of bicyclists, but the upgrades have been thrown around City Council for a while now.

According to the committee, the City of Dallas does not have the money to re-stripe 840 miles of pavement for bike lanes. Adding bike lanes to the Jefferson Boulevard bridge had been considered a priority project until the funding came into question, just last month.

Last year, city leaders announced that they will be adding hundreds of miles of bike lanes across Dallas. The announcement gained so much support that other cities, like Fort Worth, also embraced the concept.

Unfortunately, the $16 million project is not in their budget, according to council members. Donations are likely to play a major part in funding the project.

Jason Roberts, co-founder of Bike Friendly Oak Cliff, was frustrated to learn about Torres’ accident. Roberts said that he is not completely surprised, an incident like this was what they were afraid would happen. Bike Friendly Oak Cliff has been raising money themselves to pay for such improvements on the road.

If there were bike lanes, situations like this are bound to be a lot safer. Accidents happen every day, make sure that it doesn’t happen to you!
