“A brain injury is forever” – a TBI crash victim shares her story

If you or someone you love was in a bad accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury, you probably already know that there are a lot of misconceptions out there about brain injuries.  One Canadian woman who suffered a brain injury in a car accident is speaking up, hoping to raise awareness about them.

The woman, Barb Butler, believes that most people think that a head injury is something you recover from like a broken bone – it heals over time.  However, as she states, “a brain injury is forever.”  She is trying to make the point that people who have head injuries that lead to a brain injury will never be the same – it is not something that will gradually heal and then you’ll be the same as you were before the accident.

Butler works for the Brain Injury Association of Canada, as she is determined to have as normal a life as possible as she works to educate brain injury sufferers and the public about TBIs.  But, says Butler, her brain does not work the same as it did before the accident.  She was hit by a distracted driver in 1993.

Butler states that her memory skills are “almost non-existent.”  She relies on a day planner to keep track of what she needs to do and where she needs to be.  Her thought process is also scattered, and she claims that instead of going from point A to point B, she goes from point A to point C to point B then to point D.  It can take longer to complete tasks, which can be frustrating.

It is important for accident victims suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) to understand that their lives will change.  However, they are not alone – and there are ways to live a full, meaningful life.
